Summit Recap: Making Preservation and Smart Growth the New Normal

In the first Old Line State Summit since the launch of Smart Growth Maryland as a major program of Preservation Maryland, our one-day conference focused on the collaboration, advocacy, and technology needed to make preservation and conservation a reality in more and more of Maryland’s communities.

This year’s Summit attracted the largest group in recent years and made use of multiple locations in historic Frederick, including the Delaplaine Arts Center, the Steiner House, and surrounding streets as a living preservation classroom. Three tracks were offered focused on smart growth and preservation as well as workshop-style sessions on architectural documentation and cemetery documents.

As the Summit’s keynote speaker, Jim Lindberg, Senior Policy Director for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, discussed the ways the goals of preservation are interconnected with those of advocates for issues like the environment, community health, and equitable development. Jim’s research across these various fields demonstrates the need to build new rules and unwind entrenched thinking on building and keeping communities. The aim to create places that are greener and healthier is a shared goal across preservation and smart growth.
