A recent poll commissioned by Preservation Maryland identified broad, diverse, and bi-partisan support for preserving Maryland’s historic resources.
The poll, which was conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy between September 27-30, specifically found that 72% of likely Maryland voters support dedicated funding to restore Maryland’s state park’s historic structures and eliminate the growing backlog. Support for this question was strongest in rural parts of the state. On the Eastern Shore and in Southern Maryland, 81% expressed support for the concept. In Western Maryland, the findings were nearly the same with 79% expressing their support.
Additionally, a second question found that 63% of likely Maryland voters support increased funding to the state historic tax credit program. The margin of error of the poll was +/-4%. Support for increased funding was strongest in Montgomery County and on the Eastern Shore — underscoring the value of the program to rural and urban voters alike.
The poll uncovered what the preservation community has long believed to be true: Marylanders overwhelmingly support funding for preserving the state’s historic resources.
Preservation Maryland, the statewide non-profit preservation advocacy organization, intends on using these results to continue its multi-year advocacy strategy focused on increasing support of the state historic tax credit program and funding to support state parks’ cultural resources. Preservation Maryland remains extremely optimistic about the future of these efforts given the overwhelmingly positive results of this poll.
