With the support of the American Battlefield Protection Program, the Frederick County Tourism Council, Frederick County Community Foundation, Rural Maryland Council and the Delaplaine Foundation, Preservation Maryland has released a new survey to help guide the future of South Mountain Battlefield.
Located in both Frederick and Washington counties, South Mountain Battlefield’s historic landscape retains a high degree of integrity; however the sprawling battlefield, which covers three mountain passes, is also notoriously difficult to tour. Preservation Maryland has engaged Hanbury Preservation Consulting to guide a planning process to address these challenges in a report that will layout a framework for the battlefield’s future. To date, this process has involved several public scoping meetings, development of a battlefield history context report and the creation of sophisticated GIS maps of the entire battlefield area.
Public Input NOW Sought
Preservation Maryland is encouraging anyone interested in historic resources, Civil War history and the rural nature of Frederick County to take a short survey which will help shape the final report and the future of this battlefield.
