The Baltimore National Heritage Area administers four different grant programs each year that support historic preservation, heritage tourism, neighborhood greening, and economic development in Baltimore City. Two of those grants are open now.
SMALL CAP GRANTS
Eligible projects within the Heritage Area boundary fall into the four broad categories of acquisition, development, preservation, and/or restoration, and include the creation of interpretive signage. The maximum request per project varies per year but has hovered around $15,000 in recent years. Final grant proposals are due Monday, October 21, 2019.
Fun Fact: Preservation Maryland was a recipient of a Small Cap Grant in 2017 that resulted in the research, design, manufacturing, and installation of new interpretive signs along the Jones Falls.
NEIGHBORHOOD PLACEMAKING GRANTS
Neighborhood Placemaking Grants is a newer grant opportunity administered by the Heritage Area and can provide up to $5,000 in funding. These grants fund small and strategic investments in cultural and historic tourism in Baltimore’s historic communities. Eligible projects include feasibility studies, market research, walking tours, festivals, and efforts that combine both heritage tourism and environmental stewardship.
New applicants are encouraged to contact BNHA before starting the application and will need to attend an information session. The deadline for applications is December 9, 2019.
