Three Online Resources for Preservation, Sustainability, and Leadership Training

Whether you’re a historic district commissioner, main street manager, board president, architecture student, or a long-time preservationist looking to learn something new – now might just be a good time to check out new online learning opportunities abound.

E-LEARNING COURSES FROM THE ADVISORY COUNCIL ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) offers courses related to following the legal processes of historic preservation, primarily on NEPA and the Section 106 process. Free on-demand courses range from a 15-minute primer to a 90-minute course and are available for a range of professional levels and cultural approaches, including courses focused on the needs of Tribal Groups and Native Hawaiians.

Additionally, in May 2020, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation will host a free 4-part live webinar series that builds on the 15-minute Section 106 101 short-course and will encourage and allow for ample time for participants’ questions. Each course will be led by Training Specialist Katry Harris, with 25 years of Section 106 experience, and other experts. Plan to log-on to the ACHP online training portal in May for National Preservation Month.

ARCUS LEADERSHIP PROGRAm

ARCUS is a preservation leadership development program was a program created as part of the national Preservation 50 initiative, celebrating the first 50 years of the National Historic Preservation Act passed in 1966. Training the next generation of preservation leaders was an essential component of Preservation 50 and well stated on the ARCUS website, “If the movement is to thrive, it requires entrepreneurial, inspiring, and skilled leaders to guide it.”

Early cohorts of ARCUS were invited to the Past Forward conference to meet in person and then complete the rest of the courses online. Cultural Heritage Partners, LLC, has since transitioned the program to a completely online training program that is now accessible to all. ARCUS offers over 25 courses, each packed with multi-media resources about building leadership traits, like Team Builder, Risk Mitigator, Grassroots Organizer, Trusted Source, National American Partner, Orator, Futurist, and other skill sets. Each course is $75 and the Advocate class is available free to all.

STRONG TOWN ACADEMY

Strong Towns is an international 501(c)3 community organization dedicated to making communities across the United States and Canada financially strong and resilient. In their own words, “Strong Towns is for everyone who wants their place to be stronger, whether you’re an average citizen or a local leader, a trained engineer or an enthusiastic neighborhood activist, a cyclist or a driver, young or old.”

The organization and its programming, podcasts, blogs, and now online training grew out of the observations of a civil engineer, Charles Marohn in 2008. Following their mission of building up towns and communities from the grassroots up, Strong Towns is now offering some of their training modules directly to the public online. The eight available courses focus on design, redevelopment, transportation, financing, and other technical topics of revitalization range from $95 to $695 and the introductory Strong Towns 101 is available to everyone at no cost.
