In 2020, the Maryland State Archives published two new, very useful tomes about Maryland history: a comprehensive 250 year history of the State House in Annapolis and a new edition of A Guide to the History of Slavery in Maryland. Both are available for sale.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

The Archives is very proud to announce the publication of two new books, both featuring original scholarship based on decades of research by our staff.

The Maryland State House: 250 Years of History

For the first time in its 250 year history, there is now a comprehensive guide to the Maryland State House, featuring the history of its architecture, memorials, and artwork. The Maryland State House: 250 Years of History is a beautifully designed, 104-page tour of this National Historic Landmark, illustrated with stunning contemporary photography and fascinating historic images. As the State House is closed to the public for the foreseeable future, this book is a wonderful way to study and enjoy one of Maryland’s–and America’s–most historic buildings.

A Guide to the History of Slavery in Maryland

The Maryland State Archives releases a new edition of A Guide to the History of Slavery in Maryland that greatly enhances the original 2007 edition, featuring new images and information that document the scholarship and sources available for interpreting not only the history of those who were enslaved in Maryland, but also the lives of those who sought to make a life in Maryland after Emancipation, and the many challenges and obstacles that prevented so many from truly obtaining that promised freedom.

These books are available at Back Creek Books and Historic Annapolis Museum Shop in Annapolis or available for purchase online. If you are purchasing from Amazon, please select Preservation Maryland as your designated Amazon Smile charity.
