Downtown Sykesville has received the 2026 Great American Main Street Award, presented by Main Street America. For communities across Maryland, Main Streets are more than just commercial corridors, they are the historic, economic, and cultural heart of place. Sykesville is the first Maryland community to receive this distinction since Frederick was honored in 2005.
Downtown Sykesville’s success is not accidental. It reflects years of intentional investment in historic preservation as a catalyst for economic development. Through the work of the Downtown Sykesville Connection, the former mill town has transformed into a vibrant, fully occupied downtown, boasting a 0% vacancy rate and a thriving ecosystem of small businesses.
This transformation has been guided by the Main Street Approach, a framework that blends design, economic vitality, organization, and promotion. But in Sykesville, that framework has been grounded in a commitment to preserving the character and authenticity that make historic places meaningful. Since 2011, Sykesville’s Main Street program has helped open or expand 74 businesses and supported the creation of 169 jobs. Behind those numbers is a clear strategy: reinvest in historic buildings, support local entrepreneurs, and create a downtown that reflects and serves its community.

In 2017 the organization restructured as an independent nonprofit. This shift allowed for greater flexibility, stronger partnerships, and a renewed focus on long-term sustainability. Supported by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development’s Main Street Maryland program, Sykesville has become a national model for how small towns can leverage preservation to drive growth.
As Executive Director Julie Della-Maria noted, success required both “the art and the science” of Main Street work—balancing data-driven decision-making with a deep understanding of community identity and belonging.
At Preservation Maryland, we know that historic preservation is not just about protecting the past—it’s about shaping the future. Sykesville’s recognition underscores what we see every day: when communities invest in their historic places, they unlock powerful economic and social returns.
