The Maryland Heritage Areas Authority governs the state’s heritage tourism program including providing financial and technical assistance across thirteen targeted areas. In the Authority’s latest round of funding, approved in November 2019, there are 15 new funded grant projects, representing over $600,000 in matching investments made in support of heritage tourism in Maryland. Preservation Maryland would like to congratulate and highlight these funded projects.

Innovation is Important: Phase One Roof Project
$50,000 awarded to Compass, Inc. in the Maryland Milestones Heritage Area
Funding will support structural and roof repairs for a building, slated to be used as an art center, located in Mount Rainier Historic District.
University Park & Adelphi Road Connectivity Project
$40,750 awarded to the Town of University Park in the Maryland Milestones Heritage Area
Funding will support trail construction and improvements, interpretive signage, and trail amenities.
Welcome Way
$40,000 awarded to the Chesapeake Children’s Museum in the Four Rivers Heritage Area
Funding will support construction of a walkway and interactive signage located along the walkway.
Parking, Landscaping, and Walkway Construction: East New Market Train Station
$6,146 awarded to the Town of East New Market in the Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area
Funding will support parking lot and walkway construction, as well as landscaping.
Hurlock Train Station Rehabilitation
$62,500 awarded to the Town of Hurlock in the Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area
Funding will support repairs to the property, including roof repairs.
Berlin Cemetery Preservation
$17,500 awarded to the City of Brunswick in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area
Funding will support gravestone preservation and interpretive signage.
Burkittsville Union Cemetery Modernization and Preservation
$22,215 awarded to Burkittsville Union Cemetery Company, Inc. in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area
Funding will support gravestone preservation, signage, and other visitor amenities.
Rehabilitation of Douglas G. Bast Museum of History and Preservation
$17,264 awarded to Douglas G. Bast Museum in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area
Funding will support building repairs, focused on the building windows.
Improving Hager House Visitor Experience: Interpretive Imagery
$10,000 awarded to the City of Hagerstown in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area
Funding will support visitor resources for the Hager House, including the production of video content and signage.
The Maryland Theatre Expansion Project
$100,000 awarded to the Maryland Theatre Association in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area
Funding will support a portion of the Maryland Theatre’s restoration and construction project.
Garrett College to Ag Heritage Hall Trail
$100,000 awarded to the Garrett Community College Foundation in the Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area
Funding will support trail construction and signage.
Educating Visitors through Interpretive Signage
$32,000 awarded to the Community College of Baltimore County Foundation in the Patapsco Valley Heritage Area
Funding will support the creation of interpretive signage and a speaker series exploring local heritage.
Patapsco Valley State Park Trail Work Series
$15,000 awarded to Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park in the Patapsco Valley Heritage Area
Funding will support the trail construction and repair.
Place, Past & Present: A Documentary about Kent County’s Storied Landscape
$50,000 awarded to Kent Conservation and Preservation Alliance in the Stories of the Chesapeake Heritage Area
