The Maryland Milestones Heritage Area serves portions Prince George’s County to promote historic and cultural tourism – and is nearing in a milestone of their own – opening a Heritage Center in downtown Hyattsville.
Preservation Maryland was pleased to join State Delegate Alonzo Washington and Prince George’s County Councilwoman Dannielle Glaros on October 4, 2016, at a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic former movie theatre and church that will house the new Heritage Center opening to the public in the coming months.
The Heritage Center is part of a walkable hub of downtown Hyattsville that also includes the art studio Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, the coffee shop and bakery Vigilante Coffee Company, and nearby Franklin’s Restaurant, Brewery, and General Store and Arrow Bicycle. Based on the location, the mission and content of the Heritage Center will have great exposure to the community and be an anchor stop for those looking to explore the greater area of art studios, historic sites, and restaurants all connected by miles and miles of walking, bike, and water trails.
Preservation Maryland supports the expansion of the Maryland Milestones Heritage Area to include portions of Bowie, Glenn Dale, and Cheverly that can then benefit from being connected to the preservation, funding, and promotional resources of the Heritage Area program.
While the presses at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center have started rolling, Maryland Milestones Heritage Area is still fundraising to complete the build-out of the space including acquiring authentic artifacts from the region and creating interpretive panels. You can learn more on GoFundMe.
