Learn More About Making a Gift

We rely on our donors to achieve our core mission of protecting our past and investing in our future. Every dollar raised allows our programs to grow their impact throughout the historic communities that make Maryland special. We hope that you will consider us as part of your philanthropic giving, as you discover all the ways to support our work including sponsorships, workplace giving, the gift of stocks, planned giving, and more.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Marylanders who understand the importance of preserving our history are an important market niche for your business and organization. Preservationists are highly educated, professionally successful, and financially secure – we can help you reach them!

Preservation Maryland welcomes opportunities to partner with businesses and organizations allied with our mission, and there are many ways this can be done:

  • Our annual fundraiser Phoenix Rising and Best of Maryland Awards
  • PreserveCast, the award-winning weekly preservation podcast
  • The American Historic Trades Summit

For more information, please contact our Chief Development Officer Patrick Mooney at  pmooney@presmd.org.

Workplace Giving

Supporting Preservation Maryland through your workplace is easy. If your company participates in the Maryland Charity Campaign or United Way of Central Maryland, please consider designating Preservation Maryland to be a part of your charitable giving in the workplace.

Does your company have a matching program for employees’ charitable donations? If it does, look for us on the Benevity Causes Portal and let your employer know of your generous support to our effort to protect the past and invest in the future.

Gifts of Stock and Securities

Gifts of stock to Preservation Maryland may help you avoid paying capital gains on the appreciated value of stock that you hold in publicly traded companies. The sale value of the stock can then be applied as a tax deduction for you.

A gift of marketable (publicly traded) securities will generally be accepted as follows: the donor should make Preservation Maryland aware of their intent to give stock and other types of securities and advise his/her broker that a specific number of shares of a specific stock be transferred to Preservation Maryland as a gift. A stock power may need to accompany a gift of stock to permit Preservation Maryland to sell the shares if the stock is not transferred electronically. If the stock is sold, it will be sold in Preservation Maryland’s account, not the donor’s, to ensure that the donor is not liable for any tax on appreciation of the stock.

Preservation Maryland will sell the stock and immediately invest the proceeds to eliminate potential change in value.

The charitable value of the gift will be determined by the mean value of the stock on the day ownership is transferred to Preservation Maryland.

Donor Advised Funds

DAF’s are another way in which you can designate Preservation Maryland as a recipient of your philanthropic giving.

Steps:

  1. Contact your Donor Advised Fund provider and request a distribution to be made to the Preservation Maryland.
  2. Provide your DAF provider with the following information
Name: The Society for the Preservation of Maryland Antiquities, Inc. (DBA: Preservation Maryland)
Address: 3600 Clipper Mill Rd Ste 248, Baltimore, MD 21211
    EIN: 52-0609575
  3. Instruct your DAF provider to include your name and contact information with the distribution. This way, we can acknowledge your generous support.

Planned Giving

Legacy gifts through wills or living trusts provide Preservation Maryland long-term financial security and help ensure that we can continue our work for years to come.

Trusts

Trusts are handled on an individual basis in consultation with the donor’s advisors and Preservation Maryland’s counsel. To avoid conflict of interest, Preservation Maryland will not serve as trustee, trust manager, or investment manager of any trust of which Preservation Maryland is the beneficiary.

Wills/Bequests

Bequests are gifts that are made through a will or living trust. They allow the donor to make provisions for a significant future gift while still having access and control over their assets while they are alive.

Your gift to Preservation Maryland can be for a specific amount, a percentage of the total of your estate, or the remainder of your estate after other provisions have been satisfied. You should speak with the attorney who is preparing your will about how you would like to structure your bequest.

Donors may request that their bequest support Preservation Maryland’s work across the state or identify a specific program or project. Larger bequests may be segmented within Preservation Maryland’s pool of assets for special use or designation.

Life Insurance

There are multiple ways for you to provide Preservation Maryland with a gift through a life insurance policy:

  • You may name Preservation Maryland as an irrevocable beneficiary, gifting the proceeds of the life insurance policy.
  • Proceeds may be part of a gross estate, with the gift qualifying as a charitable deduction.
  • You may purchase a policy naming Preservation Maryland as beneficiary, then contribute the amount of yearly premium annually to Preservation Maryland and receive a charitable contribution deduction for the gift. Preservation Maryland will use the contribution to pay the annual premium on the policy.
  • The donor may make a gift of a paid-up policy and receive a charitable deduction as allowed by the IRS.

Retirement Plans

Retirement plans are excellent assets to leave to Preservation Maryland. You may name us the primary beneficiary, a contingent beneficiary, or identify us to receive a portion of these assets.
