Thanks to a grant from the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program as well as the generous support of the Delaplaine Foundation and the Tourism Council of Frederick County, Preservation Maryland is preparing to convene a consensus-driven planning effort to guide future preservation efforts and to develop community support for South Mountain Battlefield.

The plan will consider both land protection priorities as well as historic structures of significance, including the Hamilton Willard Shafer Farm in Burkittsville, a Preservation Maryland Six-to-Fix project.

In early 2018, the organization received many responses to an RFP for the project and is pleased to announce the selection of Hanbury Preservation Consulting to lead the effort. In addition, The William & Mary Center for Archaeological Research will work collaboratively alongside Hanbury to complete the mapping and cultural resource identification component of the project.

Mary Ruffin Hanbury is the principal of Hanbury Preservation Consulting which she founded in 2008. The firm provides a full spectrum of preservation-related planning services to organizations, governments, individuals, and corporate clients.

Prior to opening her own firm, she ran the Certified Local Government program for the North Carolina Historic Preservation Office, served as an architectural historian for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and was a program officer for the Southern Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation where she provided advisory and field services primarily in Kentucky, Florida, Louisiana, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
