The Ark of Hungerford Creek is a one-of-a-kind-historic-resource – and was recently moved to safety by the Calvert Marine Museum. Their efforts will be recognized with a Best of Maryland award from Preservation Maryland.
The Ark of Hungerford Creek was built originally as a German passenger liner life boat that then also served as a American WWI troopship. After the war, it became part of the abandoned ghost fleet in the Patuxent River. In the 1930s an Episcopalian minister retrofitted it into a likeness of the biblical Ark and brought it ashore as a summer cottage. In July 2017, the Calvert Marine Museum took great effort to relocate the Ark to their Museum grounds for maintenance and future interpretation. The Museum received a grant from the Heritage Fund to complete the work.
