Maryland’s thirteen heritage areas showcase that historic communities and cultural resources are the anchors of places where Marylanders want to live and where visitors want to experience the Old Line State. The boundary of the Montgomery County Heritage Area is up for expansion.

On June 5, 2018, Maryland Heritage Areas Authority will hold a public hearing to discuss the desired expansion of the Montgomery County Heritage Area boundary.

The area, approved in 2004, is managed by the Heritage Tourism Alliance of Montgomery County. The program looks to encourage partnerships between governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations whilst promoting heritage tourism.

The meeting will take place at the Brookeville Academy at 5 pm, on June 5. The meeting intends to discuss if the following locations should be added to the heritage area: the Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase; Josiah Henson Park in North Bethesda; Pleasant View Historic Site and Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg; the Smithville Colored School in Colesville; the Sandy Spring Slave Museum; and the Germantown Historic District.

The Maryland Heritage Areas Program is governed by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority and administered by the Maryland Historical Trust. The Authority provides targeted financial and technical assistance within thirteen locally designated Heritage Areas, each of which has a distinct focus or theme that represents a unique aspect of Maryland’s character. Together, the Authority, the Heritage Areas and local partners support the economic well-being of Maryland’s communities by promoting, sustaining and creating place-based experiences for visitors and residents alike.
