Preservation Maryland’s latest historic property redevelopment project – the rehabilitation of an 1830s historic log cabin – involved an extensive archaeological dig in partnership with the Maryland State Highway Administration which was recently chronicled by Maryland Public Television.
The project is part of the organization’s broader effort to support the revitalization and reinvestment in the historic Jonathan Street community of Hagerstown, Maryland, one of the state’s oldest African-American communities. The cabin, which was built ca. 1830 with timbers felled in the 1730s, is now in the process of being fully rehabilitated for owner-occupied affordable housing. Preservation Maryland established an MOU with the local Habitat for Humanity which will identify a qualified buyer and facilitate and finance the sale.
