Baltimore’s waterfront came alive on May 14th as Baltimore gathered to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Pride of Baltimore II during the “Legacy & Horizons” rededication ceremony at Pier 1 in the Inner Harbor. The event marked several powerful milestones: the 40th anniversary of the loss of the original Pride of Baltimore, the 50th anniversary of the vision that launched the ship, and a renewed commitment to the vessel’s future as Maryland’s sailing ambassador.
Built in the tradition of the iconic Baltimore Clippers, the ship embodies the craftsmanship that helped define Baltimore as a port city. Since its launch in 1988 as the successor to the original Pride, the vessel has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles, visiting ports across the globe while carrying Maryland’s story with it.

Speakers honored the memory of the captain and crew members lost aboard the original Pride of Baltimore in 1986, while also recognizing the generations of sailors, educators, shipwrights, volunteers, and supporters who have sustained the vessel’s mission over the years.
Events like this highlight why preservation matters. The Pride is not a static artifact confined to a museum…it is living history. Through public sails, educational programming, and international voyages, the ship continues to connect people to Baltimore’s maritime heritage and it demonstrates how preservation can remain active, visible, and deeply rooted in community identity.
As Maryland and the nation look toward the commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, the Pride of Baltimore II stands as a reminder that stewardship is not only about honoring the past, but ensuring these stories continue to inspire future generations.
