We at Preservation Maryland advocate for protecting our heritage. In order for us to be successful, we need to elect legislators who understand the importance of our history as we look towards the future. Over this election cycle, we have heard where the candidates stand on many issues. As we enter the final hours before the 2016 election, let’s take a look at how candidates stand on historic preservation:
PRESERVATION ACTION FEDERAL CANDIDATE SURVEY
Preservation Action, a grassroots non-profit advocating for preservation at the federal level, recently released the results of their 2016 Federal Candidate Historic Preservation Survey. Candidates were asked whether they support the re-authorization of the Historic Preservation Fund, regular increases to the Historic Preservation Fund, the Historic Tax Credit, and the basic intent of the National Historic Preservation Act. Maryland’s Representatives are unanimously supportive of all four questions.
HOW DO THE VPs FEEL ABOUT PRESERVATION?
Contributing to the Huffington Post, Greg Werkheiser, of Cultural Heritage Partners, which is managing the Preservation50 commemoration discussed, in “The VP Candidates on Preserving History” the past records of Vice Presidential nominees Tim Kaine (D) and Mike Pence (R) in supporting a wide-range of preservation-related topics such as rehabilitating historic schools, protecting open space and battlefields, and funding local history in their perspective home states.
