This Giving Tuesday we’re offering our friends six specific opportunities to help save and protect Maryland history as a part of our Six-to-Fix program.

Martin Luther King spoke those words 50 years ago – and they still ring true. History makes us. And here at Preservation Maryland we’re all about saving and protecting that history.
SO, HERE IS WHAT WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH, AND HOW MUCH IT WILL COST:
ANTIETAM BATTLEFIELD CLEAN-UP
What we need: $500 to provide equipment to 100 volunteers
At Antietam Battlefield we’re partnering on a project for the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service to rehabilitate an important attack-field – where thousands of Americans laid down their lives. We need $500 to pay for loppers, handsaws and work gloves to arm our volunteer army in their battle against invasive species.
PLEASANT VIEW HISTORIC SITE
What we need: $1000 to support bringing a strategic plan consultant on board
At Pleasant View Historic Site in Montgomery County, we’re working with the local steward to create a new vision and public-use plan for this important African-American history site. $1,000 will pay for a top-notch consultant to oversee strategic planning to tell the full story from Civil War to Civil Rights.
GLENN DALE HOSPITAL REUSE
What we need: $500 to off-set costs of high-definition aerial footage and Instagram meet-up event
At Glenn Dale Hospital in Prince George’s County Maryland, we are working with local citizens groups and government to find a way to get this long-abandoned property back in use – in a way that will honor its history and respect the community. $500 will help pay for high-definition drone footage of the site to market its potential and an Instagram-meetup to engage a broader community.
BALTIMORE’S HISTORIC STOREFRONTS
What we need: $250 supports a day of advocacy for repair funding in Annapolis
In Baltimore, we are partnering with several groups to assist with a major façade restoration program for historic storefronts damaged by years of disinvestment. $250 will put us on the ground in Annapolis for a days’ worth of advocacy to make the case for more funding to continue this work in the future.
HOLLY HALL HISTORIC HOUSE
What we need: $1200 for measured drawings to spark and inform reuse ideas
In Cecil County, we are working with private and public officials to help save Holly Hall – the early 19th century home that now sits vacant, looking for a new use. $1,200 will help pay for measured drawings of the site which will help to market the grand dame of Elkton to a new audience and document its story.
DOCUMENTING DORCHESTER COUNTY
What we need: $2500 to develop a user-generated historic documentation website
In Dorchester County, we are working with local government to assist with a planning process aimed at identifying and mitigating the risks to historic resources in the flood plain. $2,500 will allow us to create a web platform where property owners can document their own story and history of their home – and upload that information – thus putting the power of documentation, survey and research in their own hands and empowering them to save the story of what matters to them.
