Preservation Maryland is pleased to announce that applications are now open for our 2026 Summer Preservation Services Internship. This opportunity offers emerging preservationists hands-on experience working with our team while contributing to projects that support historic places and communities across Maryland.

Internships with Preservation Maryland provide meaningful professional development for students in fields such as historic preservation, architectural history, architecture, urban planning, communications, public history, and nonprofit management.

Internship Projects

Preservation Maryland will hire two interns for Summer 2026, each assigned to a specific project.

Heritage Fund 30th Anniversary Project

One intern will work with Preservation Maryland’s Project & Outreach Manager on a special initiative marking the 30th anniversary of the Heritage Fund, our long-running grant program supporting preservation efforts across the state.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Preparing a public report detailing the impact of the Heritage Fund grant program across Maryland
  • Drafting traditional and social media content highlighting past and present grant projects
  • Creating graphics, imagery, and written storytelling around Heritage Fund successes
  • Identifying opportunities for in-person or virtual events related to the program
  • Updating administrative materials to support future grant program management

Local Preservation Project

A second intern will work with the Program & Outreach Manager to expand Preservation Maryland’s resources related to local preservation policy and programs.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Updating local preservation guides documenting ordinances and preservation policies across Maryland
  • Drafting public-facing resources explaining preservation policy basics and best practices
  • Creating traditional and social media content highlighting successful local preservation programs and model projects

A Hands-On Preservation Experience

Beyond their assigned project work, interns will also have the opportunity to engage more broadly with Preservation Maryland’s work. This may include collaborating with staff across programs, attending site visits, and participating in organizational events.

We strive to immerse interns in our day-to-day advocacy and preservation efforts, providing experience-based learning and professional development for students interested in careers in historic preservation and related fields.

Qualifications

Candidates should be currently enrolled in a graduate-level degree program or be a recent graduate with a degree in preservation, history, urban planning, architecture, or a related discipline. Applicants from related fields with a demonstrated interest in historic preservation are encouraged to apply.

Strong candidates will have:

  • Knowledge of historic research techniques
  • Experience with data management
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Comfort interacting in a small office environment and conducting outreach when needed

The internship will run 8–10 weeks beginning in May 2026, with the possibility of extension depending on project needs and funding availability.

While much of the work may be completed remotely, interns must be available for occasional in-person meetings and project tasks in Baltimore City with Preservation Maryland staff and partners. Limited travel within and beyond Baltimore may be required.
