The Old Line State Summit is Maryland’s annual historic preservation conference. This year on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, Preservation Maryland will offer three workshop-style sessions including an off-site session led by the Maryland Historical Trust to present an attic-to-cellar approach to the documentation of historic structures at the Steiner House in Frederick.
SESSION SUMMARY
The Maryland Historical Trust’s Office of Research, Survey, and Registration will provide an overview of the architecture and history of the Steiner House, an early 19th-century Federal-style dwelling in Frederick, and use the house to discuss survey methodology and the physical evidence used to analyze a building. This off-site session will offer a top-to-bottom, attic-to-cellar approach to looking at historic buildings.

MEET THE SPEAKERS
Marcia Miller
Chief, Office of Research, Survey, and Registration
Maryland Historical Trust
Marcia Miller is Chief of the Office of Research, Survey, and Registration of the Maryland Historical Trust, the state historic preservation office, where she oversees the documentation and registration of Maryland’s historic and cultural resources. She has participated in numerous field surveys and historic structure investigations, such as the ongoing restoration of the James Brice House. She is co-editor of Architecture in Annapolis. Much of Ms. Miller’s research has focused on the complex interplay of designers, clients, and artisans in 18th-century Maryland.
Heather Barrett
Administrator, Office of Research, Survey, and Registration
Maryland Historical Trust
Heather Barrett serves as the Administrator of Research and Survey at the Maryland Historical Trust. Ms. Barrett has over twenty years of professional preservation experience, including at the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office and as an independent preservation consultant for a decade in New Mexico. She is currently a Board member of the Vernacular Architecture Forum (VAF).
Peter Kurtze
Administrator, National Register Program
Office of Research, Survey, and Registration
Maryland Historical Trust
Peter Kurtze was born in a log cabin that he helped his father build. He has worn many hats within the Office of Research, Survey, and Registration at the Maryland Historical Trust. He currently administers the National Register program, a position he has held since 1995.
