As Maryland and the rest of the nation protests racial injustice, Preservation Maryland issued the following statement:
“Along with the rest of the nation, we here at Preservation Maryland are bearing witness to the widespread protests in response to the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and many other people of color at the hands of an often unjust system. We stand united with the outrage of the protestors and the call for real and lasting change.
It is abundantly clear that we are living through a powerful and important moment in American history. As an organization dedicated to the preservation of history and the enhancement of our communities, we recognize the powerful role history and historic places have in explaining where we stand today and where our future could take us. We also recognize the important role historic preservation organizations play in interpreting and telling these stories.
From our Board of Directors to our programs, we are committed to actively working to make diversity, equity, and inclusion the hallmark of our efforts – and not just because it’s the right phrase for this moment – but because history is richer when we speak to the broad experience of all Americans.”
