Preservation Maryland is hosting Preservation Summer School “Forward from 50” on Thursday, July 21, 2016 in Frederick at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center and the National Museum of Civil War History. The inclusivity of the Museum’s narrative, its work to preserve and interpret medical artifacts of the Civil War, and the renovation of its historic building make it an engaging and thought-provoking location for our preservation conference.
The National Museum of Civil War Medicine was established in 1990 by a group of scholars and medical professionals who desired to share their interest in Civil War medicine with the public. After years of planning, the Museum first opened in 1996 in Frederick’s historic Carty Building. The Carty Building predates the Civil War and, following its construction in 1832, the building was utilized as a living quarters, a carpenters workshop, a furniture store, and an undertaking house.
What began as a private collection of medical artifacts from the Civil War has grown into an organization as vital and relevant as the plan that Dr. Jonathan Letterman developed nearly 150 years ago while at the Pry House on the Antietam battlefield.
