Preservation Maryland is excited to announce our tour schedule. This year, our tours will take you from a Civil War-era homestead, to a beach community founded by the son of Frederick Douglass, through the water of Antietam Creek, and the gravestones of Southern Maryland.

Burkittsville House and Garden Tour
Preservation Maryland is partnering with the Burkittsville Preservation Association to offer a tour of the homes and gardens of Burkittsville in Frederick County. Proceeds from the tour will help support the preservation of the Hamilton Willard Shafer Farm House, the site of Union Headquarters during the Battle of South Mountain. Preservation Maryland has been working closely with the Alliance throughout the year to coalesce resources around this important and unique Civil War-era site.

Historic Highland Beach WALKING Tour
Highland Beach, in Anne Arundel County, was founded in 1893 by Charles Douglass and his wife Laura after they were turned away from a nearby Bay Ridge resort. They brought a 40-acre tract on the Chesapeake Bay with 500 feet of beachfront and turned it into a summer enclave for their family and friends. Soon, it became a gathering place for notable African-American families. We will begin our tour at the Frederick Douglass Museum and Cultural Center, located at Twin Oaks the summer cottage built in 1895 for Frederick Douglass.

Antietam Creek Brunch and Kayak Tour
Commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Antietam with Preservation Maryland and our local partners as we kayak down Antietam Creek. Our day will begin with a locally-sourced brunch catered by Cookie’s Cooking Company at the historic Newcomer House and a talk by a Civil War expert which will provide historic and preservation context before we begin our guided kayaking tour of this beginner whitewater stretch of the Creek.

Charles County Cemetery TOUR AND Workday
In partnership with the Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites and Charles County Government, Preservation Maryland is organizing a tour and workday at several historic cemeteries in Southern Maryland. Learning from the environment, conditions, and needs of the unique sites, attendees will leave with resources to preserve cemeteries in their own communities – and get their hands dirty, too.
