Each year these awards honor the individuals, groups, and organizations that show us what is possible when we work to preserve Maryland’s rich history. You can read more about past winners here. We will once showcase our Best of Maryland Awards at our annual fundraising event Phoenix Rising on Thursday, October 17th at the Loom at Meadow Mill.

Individuals, non-profits and for-profit organizations and businesses, and government agencies are eligible. You may nominate yourself and submit multiple nominations.

Nominations are due Friday, August 9, 2024 by 11:59 pm. 

List of 2024 Awards:

  1. PRESIDENT’S LEADERSHIP AWARD

Presented to individuals to recognize exceptional leadership and commitment to preserving Maryland’s rich and diverse heritage. Nominations will be evaluated based on the length and nature of service or project, record of achievement, and the nominee’s overall impact on the statewide preservation movement.

  1. THE PHOENIX AWARD

Presented to individuals or organizations to recognize projects that are making direct investments and breathing new life into Maryland’s historic places through the restoration, rehabilitation, and revitalization of historic structures and the communities in which they reside.

  1. SMART GOWTH EXCELLENCE AWARD

An award honoring an individual, organization, or project that best exemplifies the core tenets of smart growth.

  1. STEWARDSHIP AWARD

Presented to individuals or organizations to recognize exemplary stewardship of Maryland’s historic buildings, collections, landscapes, and archaeological sites.

  1. ARTISAN AWARD

Presented to an individual or group of individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the art and artistry of a craft or trade that is used in the preservation, restoration, or rehabilitation of historic buildings, neighborhoods, landscapes, or archaeological sites in Maryland.

  1. GEARTHART PROFESSIONAL SERVICE AWARD

Presented to an individual who is employed as a professional by a historic preservation organization, agency, or academic institution and who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership, knowledge, and creativity in the protection and preservation of Maryland’s historic buildings, neighborhoods, landscapes, and archeological sites.

  1. GEORGE T. HARRISON AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER CONTRIBUTIONS

Presented since 1985, this is the organization’s oldest award. This award goes to individuals or organizations to recognize outstanding volunteer contributions in preserving Maryland’s culture and history.
